Biopolis: Promoting urban diversity
WWF introduces the Biopolis platform, designed to help Canadian cities build communities around their biodiversity.
Created in partnership with Concertation Montréal (CMTL), this platform will bring the citizen, scientific and corporate communities together to share knowledge, projects and expertise on urban biodiversity, and showcase biodiversity protection efforts in Montreal. A window into urban biodiversity, Biopolis presents innovative initiatives from all walks of life, particularly « bioneers » – the citizens, researchers and project leaders whose initiatives are highlighted on the platform – and a reference centre containing the latest developments and best practices in urban biodiversity. Projects deal with one of the nine areas of interest Biopolis is focused on, including conservation, urban agriculture, green infrastructure and invasive alien species. The platform already includes approximately 50 projects, 60 documents (scientific these, reports, guides…) and over 70 bioneers.
According to WWF-Canada, the creation of a platform like Biopolis reflects today’s reality, as cities are becoming increasingly aware of the importance of protecting and promoting their biodiversity. “Today, more than half of the world’s population lives in cities. Restoring our natural heritage and enhancing biodiversity are essential to help cities adapt to climate change,” explained David Miller, president and CEO of WWF-Canada.
In the longer term, the platform could play an important role in greening cities across Canada, since WWF intends to launch Biopolis in other major Canadian cities, including Vancouver and Toronto, by 2020.
